Set up photographs for presentation and printing. The following instructions were demonstrated in class and then each student selected their best two images from the Rule of Thirds assignment and completed them.
1. Select all layers in the layers panel. 2. Convert to Smart Object. 3. Resize for printing. 4. Create a new document... 8x10 at the same resolution as the image to be printed. 5. Drag image to new document and center. 6. Add a stroke (no bigger than 5 pixels, inside position, black color). 7. Using a simple black font, add a title just under the image on the left side and add your name to the right side. Today we will practice photographing for Simplicity. Remember our last project (Rule of Thirds) and incorporate it into your simplicity photographs. At the end of class, turn in a contact sheet showing your best 10 (not your only 10!) photographs from today's class period.
Make sure that you have your Weebly website set up and ready to use. Turn in your web address to me. Introduced Simplicity and looked at a variety of example images that exhibit it's quality. We then completed the following project.
1. Search the internet and find at least 3 examples of photographs that incorporate simplicity in their design. 2. Copy those photographs onto a photoshop document that is 8"x10" at 300 PPI. Use good design principles. 3. Add a definition of simplicity... in your own words. 4. Add your name and class period in the lower right. 5. Turn in to the correct folder. Introduced Levels adjustment layers and how to set Black Point and White Point. Completed the practice files. Introduced the Image Size dialogue box and discussed resolution. Completed the resize practice files... Sizing for printing.
Levels adjustments were to be made on your best three photographs for Rule of Thirds. Resizing Instructions: 1. Open the Image Size dialogue box 2. Maximum size is 9"x7" 3. Optimum resolution is 360 PPI. 4. If 360 PPI increases image size more than 10%, then reduce the resolution by multiples of 60 (300, 240, 180, etc.) 5. Interpolation method should be Bicubic Sharper. Setting Black Point and White Point with a Levels Adjustment Layer 1. Add a new Levels Adjustment Layer by clicking on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel. 2. While holding down the option key, move the shadow slider to the right until you start to see pixels showing up in the image, then back it out until they just disappear. 3. Do the same for the highlight slider to set white point. Reviewed sorting and labeling images in Adobe Bridge. Learned how to make a contact sheet. Photographed for Rule of Thirds and then sorted images and turned in a contact sheet of the Best 15 images.
Contact sheet instructions: 1. Select Best 15 images 2. Click on the Output tab located on the top right of the screen. 3. Select U.S. Paper in the Document box. 4. In the Layout box, select 3 columns and 5 rows. Check Rotate for Best Fit and Use Auto-Spacing. 5. Under Overlays, change font size to 6 point. 6. Save file to the correct assignments folder. Make sure the file name is Last name_First initial_Assignment name. Today I introduced the Photoshop toolbox. We discussed the tools that we will be using this year. I gave a handout and students were to take notes as I introduced the tools and their keyboard shortcuts. Using shortcuts will greatly affect ones efficiency, and it is expected that students use them. Lab time was provided to finish the Ducky Compositing assignment.
Find 3 photographs in magazines that illustrate the Rule of Thirds, carefully cut them out and paste them on a new paper, add a definition of the Rule of Thirds in your own words (NOT copy and pasted from another source) and turn in. Your assignment then is to create your own photographs illustrating this compositional rule. Try not only to illustrate the rule, but make interesting photographs while completing this project.
